The passage is Luke 10:30–36.
Question/Instrutions:
The purpose here is for you to apply what you’ve learned about how to read and interpret the Bible. The goal in this section is NOT for you to apply the passage to your life. Instead, what I want to see is the Bible read as a text, written in history, with a specific author, to a specific audience, with specific purposes. Here are some questions you might try to answer in this section (these are just IDEAS!)
? Who wrote the text and to whom?
o What do we know about the author/audience of this book? Why did the author write it?
? Are there any key words or phrases in your passage?
o What are the key words or phrases that are confusing that you might need to explain? What words need to be defined? What terms need to be clarified?
? What important themes are highlighted in your passage (your passage, not the WHOLE book)?
o Do these themes come up in other texts written by the author?
o What else is going on in the chapter? What is this section of the book about? How does the
passage fit into the larger section?
? BIG PICTURE: What is this text about? What is the author ultimately trying to communicate?
o Bring all the previous information in and summarize what the text is saying.
? This section should be focused on the author and the original audience. Avoid comments that involve
the 1st person (e.g. “I feel”, or “… is telling us”, or “we should…”)
