Week 7, Discussion 7.1: Practicing Punctuation Marks

I did not really learn anything new about the end marks in punctuation. These punctuations are easy to remember because they are the most commonly used marks, except for the exclamation mark. Reviewing the rules helped me clarify how end marks are used in quotations or parenthesis. I always seem to forget whether the punctuation mark goes inside or outside the quotation or parenthesis. Now it is clear to me that they go on the inside of the quotation marks and outside of the parenthesis if the word does not make a complete sentence, and if it does make a complete sentence, the end mark goes in the outside.
I did learn something new about semicolon and colon. I hardly ever used these because I did not know how to correctly use them. After reading the article, I learned how to correctly utilize both of these punctuations. I learned that a semicolon is used to join independent clauses. A semicolon is also used to replace commas separating items in a sentence whenever those items include commas within themselves. The colon is used to introduce a list, an explanation, or a quotation.

Punctuation is tricky at times, but this week’s materials provide valuable reminders on best practices for use in writing. Period, question mark, and exclamation mark use are straight forward, and for the most part, I did not learn anything new here. However, I was not aware that when using ellipsis, there should be a space between each of the three periods, and a fourth period added to the end of an ellipsis concluding a sentence. I also found helpful the reminder of how quotations should be used with the various punctuation marks given I often see them misused, typically placed after the end quote instead of inside it. Semicolon use is the main form of punctuation that I still question, at times making judgement calls for when to use one. As this week’s reading indicates, punctuation cannot be successfully guessed, and I still need to hone my skills for semicolon application. I feel I have good knowledge on when to apply a comma or colon, however, comma can be tricky when it comes to the confusing oxford comma. Sometimes I see the oxford comma used, and sometimes I don’t. I cannot say I am fully clear on what the English standard is, and given the debate surrounding it, I am unsure if I ever will be!

Finding a good mechanic in Saint Thomas can be quite difficult at times. I once scheduled an appointment with a mechanic to have my car checked for possible issues. I called the day prior… “Good afternoon. Are we still scheduled for tomorrow at 2pm?” He responded, “Yes we are!”. The following day, I sent a text one hour before the scheduled time —before driving 30 minutes to the destination—to re-confirm my appointment and arrival time. Once I arrived there was no one in sight! I called and texted with no response, and even waited 45 extra minutes (Now that I think about it, I can’t believe I waited that long) before finally leaving. It was such a waste of time! I could have spent my time doing any of the following: Cooking; cleaning; classwork; sleeping, anything other than wasting my time. I returned the following day, received an apology and stellar service. The mechanic made it clear that “Mr. Burroughs’ car is a priority for today” to the rest of his staff, while waiting for the work to be completed.

How would you troubleshoot a network connectivity problem?
First, I would identify the symptoms of the problems. I may have resolved the issue before. So it would be easy for me to come up with a solution. Upon identifying the symptoms, I would determine which device is causing the problem. I will then check if there is a physical connection between the router and the device. There could be a fault in the LAN connectivity as well. So, I would also check the LAN connections. I would then deploy a solution.
What steps you would take to when a host does not reach the internet?
I would restart my device, router, and modem. I will also check my wires and cables. According to Aguirre (2022), cables and wires usually become damaged or loose from constant tension stress. I will replace the cables and wires if they are damaged. If I cannot solve the problem on my own, I will contact my internet provider. He may discover several possible issues, such as a low signal level, obsolete equipment, device registration problems, etc.

In what kind of scenario would you deploy IPv6 over IPv4 in a routing topology?
Large enterprise networks (such as ISPs or larger service providers like Google, Amazon, etc.) with many routers requiring many publicly routable IP addresses could greatly benefit from deploying IPv6 over IPv4. The efficiencies gained from smaller routing tables in IPv6 should decrease the time needed for a router to make decisions, thus reducing latency over the network. However, it might be water under the bridge when factoring in the larger packet size of IPv6. Additionally, IPv6 provides large IP blocks that are no longer available with IPv4; Lastly, IPv6 increases security by backing in IPSec.

There are a few steps that you can take to troubleshoot a network connectivity problem. Step one would be to check the physical connection. Ensure that the host is accurately connected to the router or modem. Next, check the network configuration settings. Verify that the gateway, IP address, and DNS settings are all correct. Lastly, check if the firewall or security settings may be blocking the connection.
