Child Rearing
Family is regarded as an important group in society. Child rearing refers to how a child is brought up and the environmental factors determining his or her behavior in adulthood. Family sets the ground for living morally in society, with children receiving guidance from their parents, guardians, and close people. However, in the recent past––it is believed that there has been an increase in dysfunctional families. Separation, divorce, and parents’ early death contributed largely to dysfunctional families’ existence in contemporary society. While either parent may suffer from the effects of separation or divorce or the death of one spouse, children are the most affected.
Youth crime-related cases have risen in society more than ever before. This shift attracts heated debate among concerned stakeholders, with parents, guardians, and people involved in child rearing widely accused of failing to take up their responsibility wholly. Separation and divorce between parents or early deaths constrain child-rearing. Concerning parenting style topologies, it is believed that parents play a crucial role in the upbringing of their children, an attribute particularly noticeable in class performance for positive outcomes. For instance, it was established that students motivated by their parents to work hard recorded positive outcomes in their exams, whether in secondary or college or at any learning level. Notably, this style is best achieved in a stable marriage (Beckmeyer, Coleman & Ganog, 2014). This process would be achieved through continuous talk to children, especially during homework assistance (Chan & Koo, 2011). Similarly, children from stable socioeconomic backgrounds had positive outcomes regarding parenting analyses. Parents strongly influence children’s behavior and should embrace good parenting style topologies for better child development.
Parents have also been primarily got at amidst of blame for rearing children that conflict with societal laws and order. From a psychological perspective, Baumrind’s work proved influential by developing a threefold typology of parenting style (Beckmeyer, Coleman & Ganog, 2014). His style included authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian. He explained that traditional parents direct their child’s activities in a rational issue-oriented manner. This approach involves sharing of ideas between a parent and a child. In the end, a child may find subscribed to parental policy without necessarily passing through a painful experience. As such, parents should therefore seek to establish a good relationship with their children at all times possible. This good relationship is attributed to easy parenting goals, especially when instructions and directions are necessary.
Lastly, considering parenting style as the dependent variable in the sociological context, Kohn focused on value orientation under his theory of sociological classics. He believed that working conditions in different social classes are associated with different value orientations (Beckmeyer, Coleman & Ganog, 2014). He further argued that the middle class works in a complex environment. These tasks are too diverse to make it a routine, thus requiring the middle class to become self-directed. In contrast, working classes are routinized and closely supervised. Khon, therefore, concludes that this trend is transferred to the respective homes of these parents, largely influencing parenting style. He reveals that lower styles parents are likelier to instill manners in their children during high-class value consideration of others. Parents from low-class tend, therefore, to interact more with their children and thus advise from a peer-to-peer perspective as opposed to high-class parents who tend to employ a punishment approach while parenting. These styles influence child rearing with punishment perceived to spoil the child.
In conclusion, while these three approaches have been effective in determining the best approach for parents to use in child-rearing, some policies should be amended to improve child-rearing in a stable marriage to curb related issues. Meanwhile, child-rearing issues are still far from being fully combated.
